Massive culture shock awaited Adam and Eve as they left the Garden of Eden and walked into the Patriarchal Administration. They no longer had contact with God, they no longer have authority, they now had an enemy and he had their authority. But God gave mankind His Word; He gave mankind a direction to follow.
We call it the Patriarchal Administration because families were organized around the elder male, as with the twelve tribes of Israel from Jacob's twelve sons. It was also a time of firsts and very often the person who begins something is called the father of it.
Genesis 4:20 - 22
And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and [of such as have] cattle. And his brother's name [was] Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain [was] Naamah.
During the Paradise Administration God’s desire was to have fellowship with man. In this administration God still desires fellowship but He understands man is currently incapable of fellowship with God because he lacks holy spirit. It is during the Patriarchal Administration that we see God work on reconciliation through the temporary atonement in the animal sacrifice.
Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
God showed Adam and Eve the temporary covering provided by the animal substitute. Abel’s sacrifice was acceptable to God because it was the animal substitute for sin.
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
Cain refused God’s instructions concerning the animal substitute while trying to justify himself through his own “good” works. A habit mankind has yet to break!
By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
How did the animal sacrifice accomplish anything for mankind?
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
The shed blood of the animal, the giving of its life, temporarily pays the price of sin, which according to Romans is death (Rom. 6:23). The key to receiving this temporary atonement is for the individual to believe what God has said. If you believed God, as did Abel, then the animal you sacrificed as your substitute covered your sin.
The key to receiving in every administration is to believe what God has said. But, in order to believe what God has said you are going to have to understand when He is speaking to you and when He is speaking to another person or group of people.
In Paradise God speaks with Adam and Eve personally and as a couple. In the Patriarchal Administration God speaks to mankind as a whole and individually with any person who believes.
First, God communicates His plan of salvation in the stars for all of mankind to see and know.
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by [their] names.
God calls the stars by name because He gave them their names and their meaning and their purpose. The story told in the stars is a more detailed explanation of God’s declaration in Genesis 3:14-15, a coming Redeemer. How God would send a Savior, a Redeemer, who would be born of a virgin [Virgo], pay the price for justice [Libra], pour forth the blessings [Aquarius], and reign as King of Kings [Leo].
Psalm 19:1 - 6
[[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. [There is] no speech nor language, [where] their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, Which [is] as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, [and] rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth [is] from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
Job 38:31 - 33
Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth [literally zodiac] in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus [a star in the constellation Bootes, meaning he comes. Found in the larger constellation Virgo.] with his sons? Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
When the magi followed “his” star they knew exactly what they were doing. They were coming to see the one born king [Matt. 2:2]. How did they know of a Judean king if they lived in Persia?
There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom [is] the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, [I say], thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, [and] soothsayers;
Daniel was made the master of the astrologers, Chaldeans, soothsayers and magicians. It was Daniel that taught the magi about the coming king of Judea, the coming Messiah. About 500 years after Daniel was the leader of the astrologers in Babylon, the wise men from the east came to worship him.
For an in depth study concerning God’s Word as it was written in the stars see, “The Witness of The Stars” by Dr. E.W. Bullinger. I know of no teaching that provides a more complete understanding on this subject.
And the times of this ignorance [Patriarchal Administration] God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
The Greek word translated “ignorance” is agnoia and it means a lack of perception. Without spirit from God, as Adam and Eve had in the Garden of Eden, man cannot understand or comprehend spiritual matters.
1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Natural man wants to analyze everything. When you analyze spiritual matters with a natural mind you come away with fear filled superstitions or a complete denial of the existence of things unseen. John tells us that the Devil is a liar and the father of lies [John 8:44]. It doesn’t take God’s adversary long to corrupt the Word of God written in the stars with what is still with us today, astrology. There is a reason every culture in the world has its own zodiac and version of the constellations. At the beginning there was only one zodiac with one interpretation.
For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
God offered mankind a temporary atonement until He could bring the promised seed of the woman spoken of in Genesis 3. When man would believe fellowship could be established once again. Fellowship with man was God’s original desire but the fellowship in the Patriarchal Administration is not like the fellowship God had established with Adam and Eve.
The fellowship between God and Adam and Eve was first a spiritual fellowship. Three pure and righteous and perfect beings completely enveloped in fully sharing all that each was in their heart of hearts, a complete communion of heart, will, and desire. Theirs was a mature fellowship that provided understanding, comprehension, and unity of purpose.
After the fall, man’s corruption in body, soul, and spirit is so great that even a restored fellowship is no greater than that which a parent can have with his hours old child. Like a small infant, only senses information is accepted by the natural man and most of that is misunderstood. Yet, even in his corrupted state, man can see the goodness of God and it is that goodness that draws man back to his Creator.
Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
Man didn’t know what he had to do to establish fellowship with God. Therefore God leads by giving to man His Word written in the stars and spoken by other men identified as prophets.
And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
A prophet is someone who speaks for God either by speaking forth the Word of God or by foretelling. Here it is foretelling as Enoch prophesies about the promised seed of the woman returning to earth as Lord of Lord and King of Kings. The first coming of this Savior has not yet taken place and he is prophesying about his second coming.
God also spoke to the people through preaching, a proclamation of God’s plan of redemption.
2 Peter 2:5
And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
Noah preached righteousness but no one believed his report. It took Noah one hundred years to build the Ark. Do you think his neighbors ever asked him why, or asked “what are you doing?” It had never rained on the earth before the storm that brings the flood. It is approximately 1,600 years after man has left the Garden of Eden and it still has not rained on the earth. Men analyzed the words of Noah but none believed for they deemed his words foolishness.
But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
Noah believed God and Noah found grace with God. Grace, like believing, is also in every administration. The character of God never changes or varies. God is not grace in one administration but in every administration. God is Love, always. God is Light, always. God is merciful, always.
Noah and God entered into a covenant, which has been called the Noahic covenant.
And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth. And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
This covenant continues until the end of the second heaven and earth; it is established in the Patriarchal Administration but spans every administration that will follow. The covenant is to Noah and "your seed after you". Every time you see a rainbow in the sky it is as good as God standing in front of you, the seed of Noah, and saying, "This rain will not destroy the earth". Every time I see a rainbow I thank God He will not allow the Adversary to destroy the earth once again by water.
Convenants are not contrary to administrations and administrations are not anti-covenant. Both are aspects of God's Word that point the way to God's plan of redemption and salvation. Both aspects are instructing man and teaching man about God's work of redemption through the promised seed of the woman.
Upon leaving the Ark Noah makes an offering to God.
And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
What exactly is this burnt offering that Noah offered?
And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.
Here in Leviticus the burnt offering is in respect of an atoning sacrifice.
And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering…Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him…and she was his only child; And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low…for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.
In Leviticus it was for atonement but in Judges the burnt offering is an unreserved commitment to God.
And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows. And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains. And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel, That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament [to speak with] the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
Before the flood, every person on the face of the earth had rejected God with the exception of Noah and his family. Millions of people covering the earth but only eight made the decision to fellowship with God. Noah, representing those eight as the patriarch of his family, makes a burnt offering sacrifice, an unreserved commitment, of Noah and his family, to God.
Neither the Noahic covenant nor the burnt offering takes away from or contradicts the administration. Understanding God’s Word is not accomplished by elevating one aspect of His Word over another. The Word of God must fit from Genesis to Revelation. Any problem or inconsistency will be due either to man not understanding what God has said, which is man wrongly dividing God’s Word or to an error in translation.
We have seen that God did not leave man without a direction to follow. God presented His Word to man in the stars, by the prophets, and by preaching. God also gave to man a priest, Melchizedek.
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Melchizedek was the king of Salem, later that city was known by the name Jerusalem, and he was also a priest of the Most High God. Later in the Law Administration God states that the King of Israel will come out of Judea while the priesthood comes out of the tribe of Levi.
As the king of Salem he is considered the King of peace for Salem means peace. While the name, Melchizedek, means righteous, making him the King of Righteousness.
To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;
The purpose of a priest was to teach the people the words and will of God, to show the people the right way of walking and living.
For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.
Even though there was no written Word of God during this administration, the Word and Will of God are made known to the people. They had the opportunity to walk with God and to fellowship with God.
