The Illustrated Recap

This series is about how your mind works and how you can work with your mind to improve your mental health and your power as a believer with the words of God. The Word of God is the critic, the judge of what is happening within your kardia. What is happening in the kardia will set the course for your life.

Renewed mind is a reality that only applies to a child of God in this the Administration of Grace. For this is the only administration, before Christ returns, when a child of God has holy spirit by nature. Renewed mind is not simply controlling your mind; it’s not simply staying your mind, anyone who stood with and for God has had that ability since the Garden. It is a new kind of mind never available in prior administrations to corrupt natural man.1

This is the overall chart showing most of the things we have considered up to this point.

The nous is the organ of mental perception. Within the nous are many sections responsible for the different actions or functions of the nous. All these functions will result in decisions, as all decisions come forth from the nous. Decisions coming from the kardia will carry the impact of believing. Decisions from other aspects of the nous will have the impact of mental assent. Believing is a Law that is based upon certain principles, while mental assent may come to pass dependent upon your personal abilities, circumstances, and the mercy of God. 2

Simply because all these different aspects are part of the nous does not mean these different aspects will work together or in harmony with one another; therefore, the nous needs continual monitoring. The required monitoring of the nous is our check-up from the neck up, an example would be the simple question in Acts 28, “what do you think?”

When an issue, or issues, are discovered the correct repair is renewed mind. This discovery of error in the nous will in part come from God’s Word.

Ephesians 5:13
But all things that are reproved [elegcho = exposed, passive voice] are made manifest [brought into the light – passive voice] by the light [phos]: for whatsoever doth make manifest [same word as earlier in the verse, again passive voice] is light [phos].

This is the figure of speech polyptoton, both with manifest and the word light, all four coming from the same root, phos. It emphasizes the Light revealing the Truth. You don’t pick out what is off or wrong, the Light reveals it to you. Revealing it is learning, manthano, the application is your responsibility.

What is the Light?

1 John 1:5
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

John 8:12
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.3

Psalm 119:105
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

God is Light, Jesus Christ is Light, God’s Word is Light. It is God in Christ in you, with God’s Word in your mind; that is Light, that makes things manifest, exposed!

Keeping your head in God’s Word will shed the Light throughout your nous. It is light that exposes darkness. Turn a light on in a room tonight, everything becomes clear. Light allows you to see clearly. Stay your nous on the Light of God then marvel at what is revealed and take the appropriate action.

Some needed repairs that Light has revealed are handled quickly, remove a concept, disregard a thought, add a new thought. Other repairs, as in a sumballo thought pattern will take more time but it is readily available to overcome even a sumballo in the kardia. A wrong or incorrect sumballo may be a fortress, a stronghold but we do not overcome it by siege. The comparison of God’s children as soldiers in God’s Word is a metaphor, figurative not literal.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines a siege as; “a military operation in which enemy forces surround a town or building, cutting off essential supplies, with the aim of compelling the surrender of those inside.”

There have been many famous sieges throughout history. The Roman siege of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. causing over one million casualties. The German siege of Leningrad in the 1940’s cost almost three million casualties. For Americans there will always be “Remember the Alamo.” But the most famous, and unsuccessful siege involving Americans is the “Battle of the Bulge” otherwise known as the “Battle of the Ardennes” or the siege of Bastogne.

The German Army surrounded Bastogne in its advance and demanded their surrender. To siege the city of Bastogne was necessary for the German Army for you cannot leave a city, holding an enemy army, behind your front lines to interfere with supply lines. For the German Army to lose the supply lines would have been disastrous. Germany needed to take Bastogne or lose the advances they had acquired. However, pausing to take Bastogne halted the German advance completely.

General Anthony McAuliffe, commander of the American troops in Bastogne, gave the German’s a one-word reply to their demand for surrender. His reply, “Nuts!”

Amusing as his response is, it isn’t what saved the town from annihilation. General George S. Patton Jr., leading the Third Army, broke through the German lines to relieve those surrounded in Bastogne.

As devastating to human life as other sieges have been throughout history the greatest siege of all time continues unto this very day. So far, it has cost billions of lives and untold suffering through terror and torture. It is the assault and siege upon the human mind by God’s Adversary by way of the kosmos. Since Genesis chapter 3, when the Adversary gained control of the order of the world, he has laid siege to man’s mind, the nous.

Genesis 1:31
And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

This was the original order and system of the world that God had created and ordered in Genesis chapter 1. It was under this order that God had given Adam dominion and authority to rule over His creation. However, in Genesis chapter 3 Adam relinquished his dominion and authority when he chose to serve God’s Adversary.

Romans 6:16
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield [paristemi] yourselves servants [doulos] to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey, whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Paristemi means to stand alongside of, and doulos is a bondslave whereby everything you have becomes the property of your master. Adam’s new master in Genesis chapter 3 becomes the Adversary.

Luke 4:6
And the devil said unto him, all [hapas] this power [exousia] will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered [paradidomi] unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

The Devil offered Jesus all, hapas, meaning “absolutely all”, the exousia, the authority or dominion, because it was delivered, paradidomi to him. Now I need you to bear with me for a few minutes while we discuss Koine Greek grammar.

First, paradidomi is a verb and is therefore speaking of an action. Next, paradidomi is in the perfect tense, the passive voice, and the indicative mood. The perfect tense tells us it was a completed action in the past with results that continue into the present; the past was Genesis chapter 3 when Adam made himself the doulos, or bondslave, of God’s Adversary. The passive voice tells us it was delivered to the Devil by the action of Adam. The indicative mood tells us this is a fact.

So, the Devil has held this authority and power over the system of the world since Adam gave it to him in Genesis chapter 3. Sometimes God’s Word speaks of God’s system or order and sometimes God’s Word speaks of the Devil’s system or order, context decides. God’s system or order of things will return to the earth when God’s son returns as Lord of lords and King of kings. In the meantime, just as Adam’s authority and dominion never superceded God’s overall authority or dominion, neither does the Devil’s. Therefore, God can and does bless and care for those who believe His Word.

Day by day and hour by hour, mankind is bombarded with thoughts, concepts, ideas, emotions, causes, to captivate his mind and turn his thoughts and his heart, kardia, away from God. Part of Paul’s ministry was to turn people back to God and to that end his ministry is still successful to this day.

Acts 26:18
To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Through outright deceit, through what is good verses what is best, through guile, through persuasive words and speeches, through spiritual ignorance and arrogance, the Adversary has convinced people to turn from God to something else.

The Alamo fell because they never received supplies or reinforcements. The Battle of the Bulge was won because General Patton arrived with supplies and reinforcements. For the child of God to succeed there must be resupply and reinforcements. Our resupply is literally feasting upon God’s words and walking by God’s gift of holy spirit, while our reinforcements is fellowship with other likeminded children of God; after all, we are called the One Body and a body has many parts. We cannot allow the Adversary to cut our supply lines or reinforcements!

Changing the diet of phronema a person is receiving is required. Again, you can’t stop the kosmos from throwing its phronema at you, but you can start the process of interrupting the supply lines the kosmos has in operation while making new supply lines for your true genuine needs.

Read and study the Bible on your own, set the newspaper aside. Listen to or read Bible teachings, putting aside the nightly fears masked as news. Spend more time with other Christians to have likeminded fellowship, skip the bar, the sporting event, the meeting for the world saving cause. Consider and meditate upon the words of God, leaving the latest crisis to be pondered by those who specialize in kosmos theology. If necessary, God can raise up another Agabus.

It was Jesus Christ who said, “by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” and the Apostle Paul who wrote to the Corinthians, “what communion has light with darkness.” 6

Stop your evil stepfather from force feeding you food not fit for a dog! Take your seat at the banquet table of your Heavenly Father and feast upon His delicacies.

The phronema, are the things received from outside the body or from within the body. These things will consist of thoughts, ideas, concepts, feelings, desires, emotions, motivations: all that is received through or by the senses. The more clearly, we see the spiritual realities of life, the better equipped we are to ignore and reject the things of the kosmos; the things that are contrary to God and His Word. We exercise our reasoning, our logizomai, to see the thoughts and concepts of the world at the door and toss them aside.

Remember how Jesus simply ignored the words of the Adversary, “if thou be the son of God…” He ignored that phrase, rejected at the door of his mind, that is logizomai! Your logizomai will stand squarely upon the shoulders of your standard for learning. Notice Jesus did not challenge the Adversary when he said the authority was his to give, the Word of God had already taught Jesus it was an accurate statement. Reason, logizomai, with God’s Word and see the spiritual reality of life clearly.

When we studied manthano we saw how Adam parakoe, heard God’s words alongside of his own thoughts. While Jesus hupakoe, hearing God’s words and receiving them as subordinate to God. The Adversary’s intent is to make you parakoe when you hear God’s words; renewed mind is to stand as hupakoe, subordinate to God’s words.

Isaiah 55:8-9
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

This, Jesus understood and thereby learned, manthano, obedience. This Adam failed to understand and therefore, Adam disobeyed. Our choice, do we keep our mental identification in Adam and like Adam fail, or as God’s children, do we leave the kosmos mentality moving forward and upward with our God given identity in Christ?

To walk with the kosmos is to stand with our identification in Adam, negating God’s Word. To build God’s Word in the mind is to accept your identity in Christ, following his example of subordination to God, our Father.

John 12:49-50
For I have not spoken of myself, but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

All phronema represent attempted teaching and hoped for learning. Knowledge received and embraced is knowledge applied. True learning, manthano, is receiving to the point of application. Once you have allowed a worldly thought or concept to take root in your nous, like an infection, it spreads.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) three things are necessary for the spread of an infection: source, susceptible person, transmission. 7

The source is the god of this world, the enemy of God and His family. The susceptible person is anyone without an accurate knowledge of God and His Word in their mind, the nous. The transmission is the system or order of the kosmos; from academia, to mass media, to special interest groups, to the individual who just spoke to you.

2 Corinthians 4:3-4
But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost [apollymi – perishing]: In whom the god of this world [aion - age]  hath blinded the minds [noema]8 of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

The majority of the phronema learned in the world will come with thumos. Remember, there is more to thumos than anger; it is the feeling, the passion, the emotion that attaches itself to phronema when it is received by the nous. Consider Demetrius of Acts 19 and the phronema he communicated to those listening. He didn't give a monotone, hands at his side speech. He communicated passion. Passion without a godly ethic leads man away from the call of God; consider Saul, and Judas Iscariot, and Demas.

Some of the thumos the Adversary wants to implant in your mind is anger, and frustration, and hopelessness. He wants you to throw your hands into the air in complete frustration before you fall to your knees in tears of hopelessness and sobs of suffocating despair.

Romans 8:37
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

2 Corinthians 2:14
Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

John 16:33
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world [kosmos] ye shall have tribulation [thlipsis = mental pressure]: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world [kosmos].

When phronema arrives without thumos, if the phronema is kept, the thumos will be supplied, by means of association, from similar phronema already present within the nous. The similar phronema will supply the thumos from a sumballo already in the kardia.

When we looked at sumballo, we saw it is accurately “to place together with a purpose, with an intent.” Sumballo is to place together with precision, it isn’t a happy accident but a precise placement of two or more things together thus forming a thought pattern. Not only does the strength of the thought pattern increase as the pattern is enlarged, so to the thumos increases with each phronema added to the sumballo.

When a thought pattern has become large enough it can become what is called “second nature.” Second nature would be a habit performed so often that it happens automatically without any apparent consideration. The same can be said about a function on a job repeated so may times it is done without consideration. Only the novice looks at the keyboard to type. Some refer to this as a sub-conscious action.

When there are two conflicting thought patterns, each a sumballo, in the kardia, they will fight one another for dominance when the situation arises for a decision in their area. The strongest sumballo will prevail. If the weaker sumballo is the godly sumballo remember supply lines and reinforcements overcome not only a siege, but a full-frontal attack also.

Renewed mind is transforming. It transforms us into the men and women God enabled us to become in this day and time.

Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world [aion = age]: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
